Digital commerce is undergoing a quiet yet profound revolution. This time, it’s artificial intelligence that’s redefining how we discover, compare, and purchase products online. With the introduction of its shopping module, ChatGPT emerges as a smart new shopping assistant, capable of transforming the consumer journey far beyond simple recommendations.

A Massive Digitalization of Commerce.

The evolution of shopping behavior is clear. According to a recent Worldpay study, digital payments have surpassed physical ones: in 2014, 34% of payments were digital, compared to 66% in 2024, and an estimated 79% by 2030.

This evolution aligns with a broader transformation of commerce: everything is becoming digital—from product selection to financing. The launch of ChatGPT’s shopping module is therefore a natural step in this shift.

ChatGPT is no longer just answering questions or generating text. It can now directly suggest products to buy, based on the user’s expressed purchase intent.

This new shopping module can display a complete product carousel with descriptions, prices, customer reviews, and most importantly, direct links to the seller—all within the interface. A powerful upgrade that allows users to discover, compare, and choose without switching platforms.

This approach radically changes the shopping process. Previously, users had to manually compare products, prices, and reviews. Now, AI handles this curation and assists like a personal advisor—with no time constraints.

When a user expresses a clear intent, for example, “I’m looking for comfortable running shoes,” the tool analyzes the request using personalized contexts and conversation history to identify relevant products. It then presents a rich carousel with direct links to distributors.

And this whole concept is built on an intent-matching algorithm, gradually replacing traditional Google queries.

From SEO to Indexing: A New Logic for Merchants.

To appear in these shopping results, e-commerce businesses must now consider not only SEO and SEA but also AI indexing.

  • The robots.txt file must allow indexing by the OAI-Search bot.
  • Product content must be clear, structured, and rich (titles, descriptions, attributes).

It’s important to note that the products shown by ChatGPT are not sponsored. They are not advertisements, but organic results generated based on the relevance of the product listing.

For brands, this new feature represents a real opportunity. It offers increased visibility directly in an AI interface used by millions of people, delivering a seamless shopping journey right from the search phase.

As Google is no longer the sole gateway to online shopping, brands must anticipate this shift toward new acquisition channels: ChatGPT, TikTok, Instagram, etc.

ChatGPT’s Shopping Module Marks a Paradigm Shift in E-commerce. It ushers in a new era where conversational interfaces drive the purchase journey—from product discovery to conversion. Just like the internet once did, artificial intelligence is becoming a foundational tool for the e-commerce of tomorrow.

How to Use ChatGPT Shopping with Magento ?

If you’re using Magento (Adobe Commerce), you’re already well positioned to take advantage of this revolution. However, your content must be well structured and properly exposed so that AI systems can read, understand, and present it to users.

Magento is particularly well-suited for working with AI thanks to its flexibility and data capabilities:

Its data-oriented architecture allows granular management of products, attributes, categories, and business rules.

Its REST and GraphQL APIs enable structured, accessible, and queryable content exposure (products, descriptions, prices, stock, etc.) by external systems, such as AI via RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). Its support for multi-store and multilingual setups is a major advantage for AI systems that need to respond to users in different languages and regions.

However, for an AI to provide rich and reliable answers from a Magento site, it needs access to well-organized data, ideally including: Detailed product descriptions, technical sheets with structured attributes, PIM data (if integrated), related FAQ, guides, and content pages, customer reviews and testimonials.

3 practical tips to make your Magento store AI-Friendly:

  • Structure your product attributes carefully (dedicate one attribute per characteristic—don’t bury info in text blocks).
  • Write rich, semantic descriptions (use business-relevant keywords and phrasing that mirrors how customers talk to AI).
  • Expose your data via APIs or machine-readable files.

The integration of the shopping module in ChatGPT is a turning point for digital commerce. By combining the power of AI with a smooth conversational interface, this innovation redefines the role of the virtual assistant: it becomes a curator, advisor, and purchase facilitator.

For consumers, it promises a more personalized, fast, and efficient experience. For brands, it presents a new ecosystem to master—where intelligent indexing replaces traditional search optimization.

Magento, with its data-driven architecture and technical openness, stands as a natural ally in this transition. But e-merchants must anticipate this shift by adapting their content to AI requirements.

The commerce of tomorrow won’t just happen on Google—it will happen through conversational interfaces capable of understanding intent and delivering the right answer at the right time. The challenge is no longer just about visibility—but about being readable… by both machines and humans.
